Therapy DogTherapy Dog Training
Next workshop: Saturday October 5, 2013. Limited enrollment.
Nothing is more rewarding than sharing your well-mannered pooch with someone who is ill, lonely, or away from their own dog. Pet therapy is a terrific way to give back to your community, and “share the love,” and you can help-even if you only have a few spare hours each month!
This four-hour workshop will introduce you to pet therapy and prepare you and your dog to take a pet therapy test. The seminar includes discussion of the different ways you can be involved in pet therapy, introduction to many pet therapy registration organizations, familiarization for you and your dog around medical equipment, things to expect on a visit, how to respect privacy and interact with patients, how to deal with problems, working with your dog around distractions, and how to recognize signs of stress in your dog. At the end of the seminar, you will be able to participate in a simulated pet therapy evaluation.
This seminar will acquaint you with several different therapy dog organizations. Because many of our members are members of Therapy Dogs International, we use examples from that organization, but participants are not obligated in any way to join any particular organization.
This seminar is NOT required before taking ANY pet therapy test, but we believe it will be helpful to anyone preparing for a test, or wanting to learn more about pet therapy.
Therapy Dogs International Evaluation<</strong>
Therapy Dogs International (TDI) is one of several pet therapy organizations recognized by venues in our community. There are TDI evaluators in our area, who hold evaluations several times a year.
When you and your dog pass the TDI evaluation, you may apply to become a registered and insured therapy dog team.
Testing by a TDI evaluator is separate from the seminar. Attending this seminar is not required for taking the TDI test or any other pet therapy test.
The Dog Training Club of St. Petersburg is not affiliated with TDI, but because many of our members and instructors are TDI members, we use many TDI examples in pet therapy workshop. We encourage those interested in pet therapy to research the different pet therapy organizations, and choose the organization that is right for them.

PREREQUISITES for those wishing to participate in our
class with their dog:
Dogs must understand the basic obedience commands, on a leash, and be unfailingly friendly with other dogs and people. AKC’s Canine Good Citizen program is a good start toward becoming a therapy dog, so if you want to attend this workshop with your dog, we do suggest that you and your dog have either passed a CGC evaluation, or have equivalent obedience training. We do allow participants to take the seminar for a reduced price without their dog, so they can get a good understanding of what is required in pet herapy.
We hold CGC tests regularly at our club. Please CLICK HERE for for our scheduled CGC evaluations and more information.
Our next workshop fees will be:
With your dog: $75
Without your dog: $30
Click HERE for the application required for every dog (no exceptions). When separate applications are required for dogs who have been here for other classes, proof of vaccinations do NOT have to be shown again. Like all our classes, this one is on a first-come, first served basis.
